Make, Mend, Maintain

I just love to make stuff, mend stuff, maintain stuff, and also to share knowledge about all this.

Crafts are fulfilling ways to spend time and be useful, meeting practical needs and bringing us closer to the source of the materials and labour that go into the creation of our belongings, so that we can be aware of the true cost of the things we use. It is immensely satisfying to use belongings we have made for ourselves, and heart warming to use belongings others have made for us, or to see others cherishing what we have made for them.

And mending and maintaining what we already have saves resources and reduces waste, which is so important for minimising our impact on the environment. Nothing is more satisfying than taking such good care of our belongings that they last us a really long time, or putting back into action a newly mended item. Things that have been around a long time acquire a history, a significance and a story, they can be passed down through generations and treasured and used by many people, adding many times over to their value.

It could be possible for me to make something unique, creatively mend or maintain something for you, or to teach you to do it yourself. Please feel free to contact me and ask, and see my 'Sharing is Caring' page for details about my philosophy of sharing.

Some of my posts about mending:

Mending my working in the garden pants
Mendinspiration 2 - orange hippy pants, and pockets!
Mendinspiration 3 - duffles

As I've written about in these posts, creative mending is a bit of a passion of mine. Some pics that are featured also in the above posts follow. (Click to enlarge.)

And for something completely different, spot the mends in this one... :-) (Click to enlarge.)

And I thought I might just as well finish with a beautiful passage on patched clothing from Thoreau's Walden, found already underlined, in a hostel in Sweden, at just the right moment. (Read that story in the second part of this post. Click to enlarge.)
